Levanger municipality is a large agricultural municipality, as can be seen from the cultural landscape of the entire area. Levanger centre was established as early as the 1500s, when Jämtene from Sweden came here to trade with the Trønder people. One can say that the main features of Levanger’s history were extensive trade activities. The courtyards in Levanger centre were built after the last town fire in 1897, and are still well preserved. It is these buildings which give the small town its unique appearance. The houses are built in various architectural styles, such as Swiss, New-Gothic and Jugend.

The hospital in Levanger also has its own history from many hundred years ago. Apart from Norske Skog, the hospital is one of the largest employers in Levanger. After the Teaching College was built in Levanger around 1900, the town developed into the most important educational centre in the county.

With its proximity to both sea and mountains, Levanger is an attractive place to live, even more so because of its rich cultural activities, it’s well developed sports grounds, pedestrian and cycle tracks.Cafés, restaurants, shops, cinema and galleries give ample opportunity for enjoyment.
